Best Italian Restaurants in Northern Kentucky — 7 Spots That Earned It
A curated list of locally owned Italian restaurants in NKY worth knowing

We asked around about Northern Kentucky Italian and kept hearing the same thing — Florence doesn't have it, go to Covington. Seven restaurants made the list. Every one is locally owned. Pompilio's has been open since 1933.
The Local List is wellfd's curated collection of independently owned restaurants that define a category in their region. No chains. No pay-to-play. No algorithms. Just places that earned their spot.
Anchor
🍝 Pompilio's Restaurant — Newport
The oldest Italian restaurant in Northern Kentucky, open since 1933 in a building that dates to 1902. Nine decades on the same Newport corner. Mrs. Pompilio's homemade ravioli still on the menu. The back bar carries Kentucky bourbon alongside Italian wine. A 64-team bocce league runs in the courts out back. Featured in Rain Man with Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise in 1988. Regulars bring their children and grandchildren to the same booths their grandparents sat in. Everything on this list after Pompilio's owes something to it being here first.
The Covington Core
🍝 Carmelo's Restaurant — Covington
Named for Carmelo Caserta, a Sicilian immigrant who opened a neighborhood tavern and grocery in Covington where nobody left hungry. His great great grandson Billy Grise grew up in the family restaurant business and opened this one with culinary partner Mitch Arens, who trained in New Orleans before coming home. The menu blends Sicilian family tradition with Southern influence in a way that feels less like fusion and more like natural inheritance. Named a USA Today Top 100 New Restaurant.
🍝 Mama's on Main — Covington
The Italian anchor of Covington's MainStrasse Village, from Emily Wolff and Paul Weckman, the same couple behind Otto's, Frida 602, The Standard, and Larry's. Traditional red sauce Italian done thoughtfully: ricotta gnocchi, cacio e pepe, spaghetti and meatballs, tagliarini with mushroom ragu, agnolotti with pine nuts and lemon. Daily focaccia with whipped ricotta. Rooftop seating, warm room, consistently packed on weekends. Reservations recommended. As of this date, the only restaurant on wellfd to earn the vaunted “Worth the Crawl” rating.
🍝 Noche — Covington
From the team behind Alfio's Buon Cibo in Hyde Park, OpenTable's Top 100 in America, Noche brings Italian tradition and Argentine fire to a moody Covington space built for shared plates and late nights. Chef Alfio Gulisano's menu runs from house made pastas to wood fired empanadas and arancini, with short rib gnocchi as the anchor dish. Craft cocktails and an adventurous wine list designed to keep the table going long after dinner is technically over. The most distinctive Italian concept in the Covington corridor.
🍝 Governor's House Wine Bar & Italian Kitchen — Covington
A beautifully restored mansion in Covington's Roebling Point district, the former home of Kentucky Governor John W. Stevenson, turned into one of the more atmospheric Italian dining rooms in the region. Pork shank, pumpkin ravioli, braised short rib, house made noodles and sauces. A broad wine and bourbon list running alongside the food. Private party rooms in a historic mansion add an occasion-worthy dimension that nothing else in the NKY Italian scene provides. Walking distance from the convention center and the Banks.
The Outliers
🍝 Camporosso — Fort Mitchell
The most decorated Italian restaurant in Northern Kentucky, and one of the most decorated in the region, trumpeted for its pizza and much more. Eric and Amy Redfield, a husband and wife who converted a 1930s-era Sunoco station into what Pizza Today named Pizzeria of the Year in 2024, and what Food & Wine called the best pizza in Kentucky. Guy Fieri filmed a Triple D episode here in 2025. Neapolitan style wood fired pies, scratch made pasta, pancetta bucatini. Single independent location, opened 2017. Fort Mitchell is ten minutes from downtown Cincinnati. The drive is worth it.
🍝 Padrino — Fort Thomas
The NKY outpost of owner Hunter Thomas's Italian concept, which originated in Milford, Ohio in 2009. Pizza, pasta, hoagies, positioned as an affordable family Italian, which is exactly what Fort Thomas needed. House made meatballs, homemade lasagna, manicotti. Live music, rotating craft beer list, casual atmosphere. Two locations total, Milford and Fort Thomas, both independently owned. The Fort Thomas room is a neighborhood restaurant doing the category right at a price point the neighborhood can sustain.
🏁 Final Thought
Northern Kentucky's Italian scene is Covington's scene, with outposts in Fort Mitchell and Fort Thomas doing their own thing without competing for the same crowd. What Florence and the I-75 corridor lack in this category, the river towns more than compensate for. Pompilio's alone has been answering the question for 90 years. The restaurants that have opened around it since have done so knowing they were building near something that still works. The category is thinner than Cincinnati's but tighter, and every restaurant on this list is operating at full commitment.
🤌 Why These?
The Facebook thread specifically asking about NKY Italian produced a clear consensus: Pompilio's, Carmelo's, and Mama's dominated the mentions. Camporosso and Padrino surfaced from the deeper research, one with national credentials and one with neighborhood reliability. Governor's House fills the fine dining gap that nothing else in the NKY Italian scene covers. Noche brings the most distinctive concept the corridor has. wellfd doesn't rank restaurants against each other. These are simply the ones that belong.
🤔 Think We Missed One?
The Local List isn't exhaustive. It's curated. It evolves as the region does.
