Worth the Drive

Really damn good. Go out of your way for this. An hour or two in the car? Worth it. These restaurants are firing on all cylinders, great food, solid atmosphere, memorable experience. You'll be thinking about it the next day.

The Story

Some restaurants earn their reputation and then spend decades cashing the check. Pompilio's carries the kind of name recognition most places only dream about, cemented nationally when Rain Man filmed here in 1988. The question worth asking on any visit isn't whether it's famous. It's whether it's still good.

The Vibe

Walking into Pompilio's feels like stepping into a version of Newport that the rest of the city moved on from, and that's entirely the point. The carved mahogany back bar looks like it survived Prohibition because it did. The checkerboard floors, the Rain Man room with its original welcome sign still on the wall, the stained glass, the frescoed dining rooms. None of it feels curated. It just never changed. The night we visited, the woman at the next table was celebrating her 98th birthday. That's the kind of place this is. Service from our server Andrea was warm and perfectly paced, attentive without hovering, exactly what a meal this long requires. The outdoor bocce court and covered patio push it over the top. On a warm evening, that back setup is one of the better places to sit in all of NKY.

The Food

Start with the arancini, homemade fried risotto balls filled with fontina that run cheesy and rich. The marinara alongside them is the real story: deeply seasoned and good enough that the bread basket immediately becomes a sauce delivery vehicle. The toasted ravioli arrive soft inside with just enough crust and a clean hit of garlic, nothing like the dried-out chain version that ruins the format everywhere else. Mop both plates with the bread. You'll want to.

The three cheese tortellini is a standout, with cauliflower, carrots, broccoli, and mushrooms folded throughout and the cream sauce hitting every pocket perfectly. The lasagna is old school in every sense: a thick, ricotta-heavy slab cooked perfectly and generous enough to take half home. Good and honest, without crossing into revelation territory. The rigatoni bolognese runs tomato-forward with a slight acidity, more marinara-adjacent than long-braised meat sauce. Solid, but if that distinction matters to you, temper expectations accordingly. Finish with the cannoli, crispy shell, chocolate drizzle, and ricotta piped clean through both ends. When in Rome.

The Bottom Line

Pompilio's is a "you have to try it" restaurant, not because every dish is exceptional, but because the full experience doesn't exist anywhere else in the region. The atmosphere alone justifies the trip. Come for the arancini, the tortellini, that bar, and the cannoli. Worth the Drive.

"If it's not better than a chain, it doesn't deserve to be on wellfd."
