The Well Bar (Beards & Bellies Doorway)
Created by two friends who saw what Covington was missing, The Well is an unpretentious neighborhood patio bar where everyone—friends, kids, dogs—is welcome with open arms. Chef Mitch Arens (former Hotel Covington exec) brings his New Orleans-trained palate to Beards & Bellies BBQ, serving elevated bar bites like goetta balls, lamb birria coneys, and Gulf shrimp po'boys from a fast-casual kitchen window, while the bar pours craft cocktails and local brews in an industrial-chic space with exposed brick, astroturf patio fire pits, big screens for game days, and regular entertainment from trivia nights to live music.
Official Curated Review
Glad it's there. Not a place we go out of our way for, but one we're happy to return to when we're in the area. Solid, dependable, and worth stopping into without hesitation if you're nearby.
The Well isn't trying to be everything to everyone. It's a hangout — and a good one. It's a bar first, with food that makes it worthy of a spot on wellfd (and not just because of a cool name).
The space is thoughtfully designed without being overdone. A front room with an electric fireplace gives off living-room energy. The bar anchors the middle, with windows that open up to serve both sides when the crowd shows up and it's nice outside. A large patio with a fire pit extends the footprint for warmer months and cooler evenings alike. The vibe is eclectic, comfortable, and just the right amount of cool.
The cocktail program punches above its weight. Seasonal menus rotate through creative builds — elderflower and lemon in vodka, that sort of thing — and the bartenders know what they're doing. Bourbon tastings pack the place when scheduled. On a quiet afternoon, it's just as good for a drink and a breather.
Food comes from Beards & Bellies BBQ, a walk-up window tucked in the back corner. Order at the half-door, give them you number and they'll text you when it's ready. The menu is short — pulled pork, wings, quesadilla, nachos, chili — but solid. Nothing fancy, nothing trying to be. Just good bar food for when you need a bite.
If you're looking for white tablecloths, keep moving. If you want a place to grab a drink, catch up with friends, and eat some pulled pork with your hands or plastic silverware, The Well delivers perfectly.
"If it's not better than a chain, it doesn't deserve to be on wellfd."
