About Smoke Justis

Urban sports bar in Covington's historic Citizens Telephone Building at the foot of the Roebling Bridge, named after baseball legend Walter "Smoke" Justis who holds the minor league record for four no-hitters in 1908 and pitched opening day for Covington's Blue Sox in 1913. Unique blend of casual dining and bourbon lounge featuring smoky BBQ and smoked meats (a perfect homage to their namesake), craft bourbon selection, and craft beer in a warm, inviting setting where visitors and locals gather to cheer their favorite teams, enjoy America's native spirit, and celebrate the legacy of this locally owned tavern's urban legend.

Worth the Drive

Really damn good. Go out of your way for this. An hour or two in the car? Worth it. These restaurants are firing on all cylinders, great food, solid atmosphere, memorable experience. You'll be thinking about it the next day.

Sitting just across the river in Covington, Smoke Justis has built a reputation as one of the region’s go-to spots for smoked meats and bourbon. It leans into both—serious barbecue execution paired with one of the deeper whiskey selections you’ll find anywhere around Cincinnati.

The Vibe

This is a place that can shift depending on when you walk in. Early, like this visit, it’s relaxed and easy. Later, especially with a big game on, it fills up fast and takes on that full sports bar energy—TVs everywhere, noise in a good way, people settling in.

The back bourbon bar is the standout. It feels like its own experience—darker, more focused, and built for lingering. With a lineup that’s said to top 500 bourbons and 600 whiskeys, plus their own Roebling Rare collaboration, it’s not just a side feature—it’s part of the identity.

The Food

Smoke Justis is one of those places where going all-in on appetizers isn’t just acceptable—it might be the move.

The smoked wings are the anchor. They carry real smoke flavor—not just sauce-forward—and that’s what keeps bringing me back. That balance is harder to find than it should be.

From there, we went wide:

  • Buffalo chicken dip — rich, solid, exactly what you want it to be
  • Bacon-wrapped jalapeños — a little heat, a little smoke, easy repeat order
  • Street tacos (brisket) — skipped the pico, still worked; good balance with the chipotle sour cream and corn-bean mix
  • Mac & Meat Bowl (brisket) — heavy in the best way; comfort food that doesn’t try to be anything else

We also got into a couple heavier hitters:

  • Brisket grilled cheese — probably the most memorable bite of the day; smoky, melty, and built right, with the au jus pushing it over. We've heard some comments that it can be dry, but that was not the case today.

Everything landed where you want it—nothing missed, nothing felt like filler. Across multiple visits, consistency has been part of the appeal.

The Take

This is an easy Worth the Drive.

I’ll go out of my way—30 minutes without thinking about it—to meet someone here, especially if the plan is to sit, pick through a table of shareables, and maybe settle into the bourbon list for a while.

It’s not trying to reinvent barbecue. It just executes it well, adds a serious whiskey program, and creates a space that people actually want to spend time in. That combination works.

Update

Tried the burger on a day they were out of wings. Won't do that again. Stick to what they do best. You don't go to a Chinese place for lasagna.

"If it's not better than a chain, it doesn't deserve to be on wellfd."
