Official Curated Review
Really damn good. Go out of your way for this. An hour or two in the car? Worth it. These restaurants are firing on all cylinders, great food, solid atmosphere, memorable experience. You'll be thinking about it the next day.
Prime Cincinnati sits in one of the most competitive restaurant stretches in the city. Swung in for lunch on a typical Monday.
Ruby’s, BOCA, Via Vite, Nada, Marigold, Bourbon Kitchen, Davidson. Around Fountain Square, nobody survives on location alone. If a steakhouse lasts here, it is because people choose to come back.
Prime has done exactly that for years.
That kind of staying power matters. Downtown steakhouses are expensive to run, easy to get wrong, and surrounded by competition that does not forgive mediocrity. Prime is still here because it understands the balance: enough polish for a business dinner, enough comfort for a random Tuesday lunch.
Prime feels like a serious room.
Dark linens, warm hardwood floors, a curved central bar anchoring the lounge, and a private dining room behind glass that makes it clear they handle events as comfortably as they handle everyday service. The patio opens onto the corner of 6th and Walnut, which gives lunch a front-row seat to downtown without turning the restaurant into a tourist trap.
At lunch, the energy is relaxed, but the room never feels casual. It feels intentional.
The service matches it.
When I ordered the truffle deviled eggs before my guest arrived, our server quietly held the plate rather than let it sit for fifteen minutes getting warm. No speech, no performance, just awareness. That is the difference between someone taking an order and someone actually paying attention.
The Tenderloin Tip Sandwich at $15 is the kind of lunch that makes you question every overpriced downtown meal you have tolerated.
Certified Angus tenderloin tips cooked medium rare, horseradish Havarti melting into the meat, crispy onion strings stacked high, and chipotle aioli pulling the whole thing together on a brioche bun that actually held up. Not soggy. Not overloaded for Instagram. Just built correctly.
The Lobster Bisque at $9 was rich, smooth, and carried the kind of depth that tells you immediately it came from real stock, not cream pretending to be flavor. If you are looking for giant chunks of lobster, this is not that bowl. If you care more about whether it tastes like lobster, this is exactly right.
The truffle deviled eggs are marked “Popular” on the menu and earned it. The filling is thicker than most, lighter on mustard than expected, and the truffle shows up without turning the whole thing into perfume. As someone who takes deviled eggs seriously at home, I noticed immediately.
My guest swapped into blackened chicken tacos built off the steak taco base and said they were excellent. The chicken stayed moist, the char held, and he was full after two.
He ate the third one anyway.
I have been eating at Prime for years, and it has never given me a reason to stop.
That matters more than one flashy dinner.
This is a downtown steakhouse that delivers at lunch without forcing you into steakhouse pricing, while still giving you every reason to come back at night for the full dinner program. The foundation is there: strong service, a room that knows what it is, and food that feels built by people who understand restraint.
Too many steakhouses confuse expensive with good.
Prime doesn’t.
That is why it lasts.
"If it's not better than a chain, it doesn't deserve to be on wellfd."
