Official Curated Review
Solid choice. Make the effort to get here. These are your reliable go-to spots, good food, good vibes, no regrets. Not a special-occasion destination, but consistently worth showing up for. The bread and butter of great local dining.
Coppins sits inside Hotel Covington, a restored 1907 building on Madison Avenue that has been a landmark in downtown Covington for over a century. The restaurant opened in 2018 and built a reputation as the rare hotel dining room that operates like it has something to prove. The name nods to the building’s history, while the kitchen leans into regional identity without turning it into costume. This is Covington presenting itself without apology.
The space is doing more than one thing at once and pulling it off. The main dining room runs bright and open, with live edge wood tables, crystal pendants, and floor-to-ceiling windows that blur the line between inside and out. Move deeper and the room shifts entirely: dark painted brick, scattered gold medallions across the walls, and tiered chandeliers hanging beneath a glass roof that opens the whole thing to the sky. The two rooms feel like different restaurants sharing a building, and somehow that tension works.
The barrel wall is a standout moment: a floor-to-ceiling steel rack stacked with whiskey barrels framing the scripted quote, “If these United States are to be considered a body, then Ohio would be its Heart and Kentucky its Soul.” It is the kind of design choice that either lands or reads as try-hard. Here, it lands.
The courtyard patio out back is the sleeper. Ivy climbs century-old brick walls, string lights wrap young trees, and wicker seating circles a wood-burning fireplace branded with the hotel monogram. On a good night, that patio is one of the better outdoor dining experiences in the region.
The cocktail program credits each drink to the individual bartender by name on the menu. That is a confidence move, and the bar earns it. Our server Grant was knowledgeable and attentive throughout, reading the table well without hovering.
Start with the meatballs. Seasoned ricotta and Parmigiano Reggiano disappear under a heavy snowfall of fresh cheese, with chives scattered across a San Marzano sauce that has real depth. The texture is the story. These are fall-apart tender in the way that only happens when someone is paying attention. They arrive with grilled focaccia built for dragging through every last bit of sauce. Order them.
The Half Roast Chicken is the reason to come. The seasoning runs all the way through the bird, which means they are doing the work before it ever sees heat: brined, patient, disciplined. The beef fat fries are crisped, herbed, and good enough to justify ordering them on their own. The chicken jus pools underneath and ties everything together. At thirty-eight dollars, this is the dish Coppins should be known for.
The Grilled Branzino over white beans with zhoug is a confident, restrained plate on paper. The herb sauce and the beans are exactly right together. The execution stumbles at the finish. The skin arrived soft, which at forty-five dollars is the one thing it cannot do. Crispy skin is the point of branzino prepared this way, and without it, the dish loses its edge. The flavor underneath is there, but at that price, almost right is not enough.
The Liquid Knowledge cocktail, built with Four Roses Single Barrel, ginger, lime, soda, and ginger allspice bitters, is refreshing and balanced without trying too hard. The name is self-aware without being annoying. The affogato closes the meal properly: espresso pulled dark and poured at the right ratio over gelato that melts into it slowly enough to matter.
Coppins is a hotel restaurant that refuses to behave like one, and mostly succeeds. The chicken is excellent. The meatballs are excellent. The patio is one of the better outdoor dining experiences in the region, and the cocktail program backs up its own confidence.
But at forty-five dollars, soft-skinned branzino is not a small miss. It matters.
Drive here for the chicken, stay for the courtyard, finish with the affogato. Worth the short detour, just not quite worth an hour drive.
