Check's Cafe

A Schnitzelburg institution in the Murrow family for three generations. Check Sumpter opened the tavern in the late 1930s and sold to Joe Murrow Sr., who ran it until 1980 and gave the place its soul — knowing every regular by name. Grandson John Murrow runs it today. Order at the bar, grab a seat on the checkered floor, and wait for your name to be called. The signature chili, bean soup, bratwurst, pan-fried oysters, braunschweiger, and fried chicken are classic Germantown tavern fare at prices that haven't forgotten the neighborhood.
