Worth a Short Detour

Solid choice. Make the effort to get here. These are your reliable go-to spots, good food, good vibes, no regrets. Not a special-occasion destination, but consistently worth showing up for. The bread and butter of great local dining.

The wall calls it the dive that's worth the drive. Close. Call it the dive that's worth a short detour.

The Story

Bard's earned its name on the loud stuff. The cheese curds and the eleven-patty Bardzilla challenge put it on Food Network's Ginormous Food, and KET filmed an episode here for Burgers in the Bluegrass. Ask around NKY for the best burger and this Latonia counter comes up more than almost anywhere else. Owner Jordan Stephenson reopened the doors in 2015 and painted the tagline straight onto the wall: the dive that's worth the drive. The famous things are real. They are also the least interesting thing about the place.

The Vibe

Bard's is bigger and stranger than the menu lets on. The front room is pure diner: red and blue walls, black vinyl booths, mismatched chairs, and paper towel rolls on the tables. Keep walking and the place just keeps unfolding. There's a bar area, a back dining area with arcade games and pinball machines that look like they've been there forever, a mural-lined hallway, and a garage-door lounge with couches, a driving simulator, and access to a fenced patio tucked behind the building. Hand-painted murals, local touches, and a little bit of organized chaos are everywhere. None of it is polished, yet it all has style.

The Food

The burger is hand-pattied and smash-style, seasoned and seared. The menu tells you up front it comes cooked through, which is honest and standard for the style. The patty holds up. The seasoning is the part that lands: you taste it, and it is not just salt. The bacon is excellent, thick-cut, and locally sourced (My guess it is Bluegrass brand, but bartender could not confirm 100%). One real miss on the build we tried: the fried egg arrived broken and cooked solid, which defeats the entire reason to put an egg on a burger. A yolk that does not run is just a hot disc of white. Order it without the egg, or hope they fix the technique. A yolk that actually ran would have tied the patty and bacon together, and probably moved this up a rung.

The curds are the television draw. They are fine. Curds are curds. The quieter find is the sauce program: the chipotle mayo and marinara are both house-made, and the chipotle carries a real smokiness. The best detail on the menu is the side. Your burger comes with fries, a cup of chili, or a full Cincinnati cheese coney. Taking the coney is the correct answer. The chili is house-made and hits the distinct, love-it-or-hate-it Cincinnati profile dead on, clearly on purpose.

One thing the printed menu does not tell you: there is an off-menu board by the kitchen window. Smoked wings, stuffed mushrooms, pulled pork chili, and a rotating shake list. There is a smoker out back, so the smoked items are the real thing, not a warming-tray afterthought. Ask what is on it.

The Bottom Line

The cheese curds get the attention, but that's not why we'll be back. The burger is, thanks to the seasoning and bacon, and a menu that lets you make a Cincinnati cheese coney your side dish. The egg was a miss, but an easily fixable one.

None of this is destination dining, and the wall oversells things by about a notch. But if you're anywhere near Latonia, it's worth the detour. We'll definitely be back to work our way through the deep burger list.

Bonus: Tuesdays feature a $10 special that includes your choice of six burgers and a side. Yes, a chili cheese coney counts. Somewhere in the hallway, Wimpy would approve.

"If it's not better than a chain, it doesn't deserve to be on wellfd."
