About Back Porch Saloon

A West Chester neighborhood institution since 1972, when Al and Dori Lang first opened the doors. Cincinnati native Jim Schmalz purchased the saloon in 1983 after years of pursuit—he'd previously owned Barleycorn's in the mid-'70s. What started as a 44-seat bar with a small porch has grown into a sprawling entertainment destination with multiple patios, 20 flat-screen TVs, a tiki bar, and sand volleyball courts. Award-winning BBQ ribs and the prime rib sandwich draw regulars, while live music, cornhole leagues, and private event space make this more than just a restaurant.

If You're Nearby

Glad it's there. Not a place we go out of our way for, but one we're happy to return to when we're in the area. Solid, dependable, and worth stopping into without hesitation if you're nearby.

Their motto nails it: "It's More Fun to Eat in a Saloon Than Drink in a Restaurant." It's bar food and there's nothing wrong with that. The jalapeño poppers were firm and flavorful, breaded mushrooms hit the mark, and the chicken fingers surprised—light breading, actually juicy, a rarity for bar food. The BBQ Bacon Cheddar Cheeseburger was cooked exactly as requested (that sweet spot between medium rare and medium), and the signature Texas T. Pork Tenderloin lives up to its massive reputation. The deviled eggs and prime rib sandwich were fine but unremarkable. Service was genuinely excellent—attentive without hovering—and the place was packed, which says something. With sand volleyball courts, a tiki bar, and sprawling patios, this feels like a spot that really comes alive in summer, and we'll be back on a warm day to experience it properly. Solid neighborhood hangout—just know you're coming for the vibe and activities (they have a trivia night we're told is a blast), as much as the food.

"If it's not better than a chain, it doesn't deserve to be on wellfd."
